This happened on a work machine. Does this mean that my machine is being monitored by a sysadmin, or perhaps that it has been compromised? Is there a chance that this could happen as a glitch, or by some other means?

Any insight would be appreciated.

I'd usually agree with the Windows key thing, except I was leaning back reading the screen when it happened, and it quickly disappeared again. It was like the guy hiding in the closet tried to cover a sneeze.

Something like this is a possible, but unlikely, cause. It is much more likely you are accidentally hitting the microsoft key.

No, you might have accidentally pressed the windows key on the keyboard. If it happened while typing, that is most logical. The computer may be monitored.

First of all, if it is a cracker (not a hacker) then they wouldn't be so stupid to make it obvious unless they were pranksters.

The windows key is much, much more likely.

Never happened to me, but it could be a hacker or the IT peeps are playing around with you.
