THAT DEPENDS - Do you mean flat screen (CRT with flat screen) or flat panel (LCD monitors) ?
If you mean between flat panel (LCD) or regular monitor (which is a CRT) then DEFINITELY FLAT PANEL.
For a number of reasons:
1. When you were little, your parents told you not to sit too close to the TV. Why? Because of the radiation. Too much radiation from CRTs. That's why they used to say pregnant women who work infront of computers, should not be using it for long periods. This was before LCDs became mainstream.
2. LCDs take up less desk space.
3. LCDs consume less electricity.
Personally, I will get those x-brite, opticlear or whatever terms they may use for LCDs with screens that are GLOSSY, not the dull ones. Colours on the glossy screen look more true to life. Only drawback is during the day, outside light may reflect off it which makes it harder to see. But just face it away from a window. I have both types and I will NEVER buy those dull monitors again. BIG difference in the richness of colour and clarity of images.
In terms of size, I have a 19" and that suits me fine.

Flat panel is the latest display technology and gives really good image quality. each sub pixel is individually controlled to produce over 16 million different colors. All of this means that you get awesome images that are easily seen in a display that is less than six inches thick.
AND a flat screen provides a lot of room on your computer desk...lol. I have a monitor, but only because I couldn't afford the flat screen. if you can afford it...go for it.

Regular monitors put out alot of heat and the flatscreens don't. They're better if you're in a small room or don't have a/c.

Flat Screen is the way to go, it has better integrity, color, and it takes up less space on your computer table or desktop or whatever you have. By the way LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display.

Yes!
With an old CRT monitor, you have less space to work with on your desk.
And flat screens are incredibly thin!
