I always hear, "if you had worked there, you would never eat their chili!"

In the 1980's Wendy's chili arrived at the restaurant as a canned meat-free solution which would be placed in a hot pot adjacent to the grill. A key to the Wendy's model is that they have burgers on the grill at all times ready to be made into sandwiches without regard to the traffic at that particular location.

Burgers which had been on the grill longer than considered servable would make their way to the chili pot. Depending on the time of day and the general traffic at the location, I've been served Wendy's chili with next to no meat and a bowl of mildly flavored ground beef. The chili was recycled from day to day, and new starter added as required. Due to the high acidity of the starter, this passes health code regulations.

I have worked at Wendy''s, and have made the chili, I am not so sure why every one thinks that it is so great. But my Husband and Father love chili. They seem to think that the chili at Ruby Tuesday's is really good.

You hear that about a lot of places, but the bottom line is that the Board of Health wouldn't allow them to operate if the ingredients weren't up to scratch. Part of it may be because working around food all day isn't terribly exciting -- would you like to peel potatoes for eight hours at a stretch? Or grate carrots? Or make chili?
