My baby is 10 weeks old. She can no longer suck well. she cannot hold a paci in her mouth and she doesnt grip bottles well. She has been geting worse steadily, and it has been going on for a few weeks. Is there something i can do to help her relearn to do this? or does it mean she just needs to be switched to baby foods"?

Have you tried those "anatomical" bottles. The ones that are shaped more like a woman's nipple? We had to do that for our 2nd son. He lost too much weight his first month. Helped a bunch. I'd also check with your obstetrician just to make sure

Don't switch to baby foods!!!! I have never heard of this problem, and there is no imformation that I could find on the net, so call your pediatrician, that is very important. It may be a physical or mental condition. You should make a same day apt. today get on the phone if you can't get a hold of doctors office then go to the hospital, you should never wait when you have a problem this big, not to scare you but it may be something that could turn into a fatel situation. Why you waited for a few weeks I don't know Doctors tend to only want you to wait for a few days. What are you still doing home GET MOVING NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do not feed her baby food. Babies aren't supposed to even attempt to start any type of solid food (rice cereal, baby food etc) until 4 months, most 5 or 6 months. This is a serious problem if she can't suck. I had a 9 year old in my elementary class (i'm a teacher) who lost the same reflex, and then didn't learn to eat normally. At 9 years old her mom was coming to school after lunch everyday to feed her a liquid shake, because she couldn't suck and swallow normally. They were trying to teach her, but at 9 it was too late. She never ate solid food, she'd miss school 3 times a week for dr. appts and hospital trips. Dont do that to your child. Take her in now, and get it taken care of so she doesn't end up in the same situation. It was heartbreaking to watch.

Take her to the doctor. A healthy baby doesn't lose its ability to suck. The doctor may want to run some tests to rule out any health issues.

You might want to take her to the pediatrician and make sure that she is not tongue tied. This is when the little piece of skin that is under your tongue is joined to far to the front part of the tongue. It is a simple procedure. My son was tongue tied and he simply had a procedure done in the hospital. Don't freak out about this - it is a very common thing in babies. Hope this information helps you.

You really should get her to her pediatrician. At 10 weeks, she should still be on a formula diet. Most doctors don't recommend giving an infant cereal until around 4 months.

sucking is a normal and constant thing, if it's regressing it could be a major sign something is wrong ( my friend's child was goin into heart failure and the same thing happened , but they caught it and did a transplant and the baby is fine ) Not to scare you it could be lots of things ,Just make a doctors apt now

Oh wow, I can't say anything that hasn't been said here already, but it does sound like something that a doctor should investigate. Good luck, and I hope that it's something with an easy fix.

sucking is a natural reflex in infants. Baby foods should wait until she is at least 3 months old. You should definitely speak with your pediatrician about your concerns.
