You can make MP3's smaller by lowering their bitrate.
You will probably need a bit of software to do that (mp3 encoder). I'm sure there are some freebies around on the internet.
As a rule. The most popular bitrate is 128kbs. However, you can get away with 96kbps without losing an awful amount of quality. It depends on what you are happy listening to.
go to http://www.filehippo.com and look at the Sound an Video section.
There's a good little app called Audiograbber, which will allow you to save mp3's and has a whole host of other features. You can even take traks directly from a CD to mp3!

If you already have a load of mp3 files the best freeware for doing this is Switch Sound File Converter
- http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html?ref=google&ref2=c24switchsearch&ref3=20file&gclid=CJHthI33jIYCFQlREgodSxc8jg
Click on "Windows download". The prog will ask you if you want to download other software - decline as none is free apart from Wavepad. When the programme is installed, run it and add the mp3s you want by clicking on the + sign. Then specify an output folder where your new tracks will go - usually in My Music folder or create a new folder especially for this task. Below that select output format = .mp3. Now click on encoder settings. In the new window make sure Constant Bitrate (CBR) is selected; now from the drop down menu choose the bitrate you want. Anything lower than 128kbps and you will notice a drop in quality but you can get away with 112 or 96kpbs. Once that's done, press convert.
If you want to convert mp3s from cds then load your cd whilst Switch is open and add the .cda files as usual. Hint: to load all tracks on a cd at once into Switch, press CTRL+A together.

You could try encoding the songs at a lower bit rate. It will save space but sound quality will be reduced. Try and find the bit rate that hits the sweet spot for you (i.e. size v sound quality).
