No, the African countries did better last time, with 15 points in the group stage and 1 team in the round of 16 and quarterfinals, as opposed to this cup with 12 points and 1 team in the round of 16. Ghana, however, which is one African country did very well, with a second round berth in their first world cup. Ecuador also did well, getting their first second round appearance in their second cup. Trinidad and Tobago, Australia, Switzerland, and Ukraine (for T&T, AUS, and UKR it was their first cup ever, and Switzerland wasnt in the 02) all played surprisingly well. Plus, lets not forget the ones that we would tend to forget, such as Portugal, France, and Italy, all of whom did not make the quarterfinals in 2002, (France didnt even score a goal and Portugal didnt advance) who all made the semifinals this time around.

Portugal, definitely. They have improved quite a bit from previous years. However that is no guarantee that they will continue to improve. In 1998, Croatia won third place, and in 2002, Turkey won third as well, but both of these teams haven't had any more glory since then. So we will see if Portugal has really improved.

1-portugal:
i was surprised by their performance they were knocked out from round 32 while this year they reached the semi-finals ...i think thats a great performance because it has been 40 years since they reached the semi-finals
2-france:
same as portugal..they were knocked out from round 32 and didnt score any goal...and this year the reached the finals ..thats another improvment
3-England:
Englands performance changed throughout the last years...remember their performance before ?most of their shoots were not good and their was no talent in their performance ..they improved this year so i think next year they might reach the semi-finals
these were only the teams in my opinion improved
as for the teams which deteriorated
1-BRAZIL:
no comment about their performance
2-spain:
althought they have the best league they didnt even reach round 8
these were the teams who deteriorated in my opinion
THE teams who stayed in the same performance
1-Germany...the same good performance and they reached the finals last tournament and took third place this year and 3 times
first place winners

Ghana would of been my first choice, but outside of the African countries, I would have to say Australia, and possibly Switzerland.

Ghana and Ivory Coast both did well in their first appearance. Australia was also very good. I would say Ivory Coast was most impressive. They played very well against top teams Argentina and Holland.
