An optical mouse is probably best as it does not require regular cleaning or a mouse pad to work correctly, I use one on a black surface without any issues. A trackball is a good alternative for some, especially if you have limited area to move the mouse around.

I only use the Kensington Expert Mouse, which is actually a trackball.
It stays in place, no lifting and replacing it, and it is much more accurate for graphics, like PhotoShop
They aren't cheap ($80 - $90) but I have 4 of them and wouldn't use anything else.

i'd say for the money, a logitech optical mouse is the way to go, 15 bucks for a decent one. but i'd go for the 20 dollar unit. i like the logitech over any other brand. i've used many.

I have a Microsoft Wireless Optical mouse. It's great, best mocue I've ever had.
