I did not find anything that would be insulting to muslims...Can someone tell me what it was? Sulman Rushdie is himself a muslim, why would he do insult his own religion?

On the contrary, it is a wonderful book. Any good reasons for the book to be banned would be appreciated...

My understanding is that it portrayed Muhammed as a doubter and called the Koran into question by suggesting that some of what Muhammed received as the word of Allah was the real deal and some was some sort of cruel joke on the part of the angel who delivered the verses to him. That's probably very rudimentary because I'm not Muslim. I read the book (hated it, BTW) and that's what I got from it.

And, for the record, I don't think most Muslims actually wanted to kill him. I know several prominent Muslims came out against the death sentence imposed by extremists in Iran.

Well, you have to understand that they want to kill all non-muslims anyway. And they are so insecure about their deal that anything at all will set them off. Look at how many people marched in the streets and called for the deaths of a few cartoonists. I think people were actually killed during the "cartoon uproar." These people have no sense of humor what-so-ever. They want to rule the world (a stated goal is a worldwide muslim state under the rule of a Mahdi,) and drag us all back to the 6th or 7th century. Everyone else better wake up and smell the Burka before it is too late. You cannot reason with or negotiate with people who view negotiation and any sort of compromise as dispicable weakness.

On a lighter note, I hear Rushdie is writing a new book to be called, "Buddah is a Big Fat Bastard." LOL LOL

It's believed to portray Muhammad in a bad light:

"The publication of The Satanic Verses in September 1988 caused immediate controversy in the Islamic world due to what was perceived as an irreverent depiction of the prophet Muhammad. The title refers to a Muslim tradition that is related in the book. According to it, Muhammad (Mahound in the book) added verses to the Qur'an accepting three goddesses that used to be worshipped in Mecca as divine beings. According to the legend Muhammad later revoked the verses, saying the devil tempted him to utter these lines to appease the Meccans (hence the Satanic Verses). The book was banned in many Islamic countries."

The Wikipedia page for "The Satanic Verses" has a timeline of the controversy surrounding the book as well.
