a ping is just a packet of data that is sent by one site to another. When recieved the packet is re encapsulated and sent back to the original sender. Unless someone is constantly pinging you repeatedly, this should have no impact on your system.

Pinging is normally used to see if your computer can "see" another computer. What happens when you ping google.com for example is this:
You type 'ping google.com'. This tells your computer to send a very small packet of information to the IP address that is google.com. When the google.com server receives this packet, it replys, or 'echos' a response back to you to let you know that it heard you.

Some server, such as microsoft.com do not echo these packets back for one reason or another. In older versions of Windows there was a way to hurt other computers by using the ping command maliciously, but that has been removed from Windows via new versions and updates.

Still, it's not a bad idea to turn off ping echoing for your personal computer unless you know that you want it on. Often times people will ping large groups of possible IP addresses trying to find a vulnerable computer that they might then "crack" into.

a ping itself is not a malicious thing it is used to verify a computer exists and there is a connection to it (exactly like a ping on a submarine it sends a ping waits for the signal to return).a correctly configured firewall will stop returning a ping response to the remote computer and verifying that your computer exists on the net.
you can use the ping command by going to ->start->run->cmd
once the black window comes up type for example
ping 66.94.234.13 or
ping yahoo.com

A ping will not change anything on your computer nor harm anything. Its just a quick packet that asks your computer's network card "are you alive".
