"I am shocked and deeply distressed by the apparently deliberate targeting by Israeli Defence Forces of a UN observer post in southern Lebanon"
"The co-ordinated artillery and aerial attack on a long established and clearly marked UN post ... occurred despite personal assurances given to me by (Israeli) Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that UN positions would be spared Israeli fire."

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan 7/25/06

"But you need to look at the events of yesterday,” he urged. “The shelling of the UN position, which is long-established and clearly marked, started in the morning and went on till after 7:00 p.m., when we lost contact.”

“You can imagine the anguish of the soldiers and the men and women – unarmed military observers – who were down there in the service of peace,” he said, stressing that the peacekeepers were in frequent touch with the Israeli army, pleading with them to avoid striking their location"
Kofi Annan, 7/26/06, Rome

I'm sure they knew the world would notice.

Btw, I find it depressing also. What I don't understand or have a hard time accepting is whether or not it was deliberate. I wonder what they had to gain by destroying a UN post?

Yeah but what Kofi failed to mention was that there was a hezbollah base right next to the outpost and that these so called "observers" were helping Hezbollah unload rockets. These were also the observers who videotaped the whole incident that started this war when Hezbollah went into Israel and killed 8 soldiers and kidnapped 2. Then kofi the monkey boy lied about it. Then when he found out the tape existed he had to admit it. Everybody knows the UN is an anti-Israeli organization. And now that Kofi pretty much accused Israel of deliberately targeting the post, people are asking "Where's the proof??" There is no proof. That's because it's simply not true! And now Kofi "monkey" Anan is starting to try to back off from his premature statement. So,stop being such a moron. Don't you think that if Israel wanted to they could have flattened Lebanon into a parking lot in just 2 days and end it all right there? Who would stop them, Syria with their toy soldier army? Give me a break. It's because of Israel's morality that this doesn't happen. They don't want to totally destroy Lebanon. Hezbollah doesn't care! The more civilians that are killed, the better it is for them. That's why they use civilians to hide behind. Hezbollah, Lebanon and the UN all suck. Have a nice day.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was a pretty stupid error for the so called, best trained military in the world. Heh...

Or, crooked soldiers out of control.

Basically, while I can conceive of it being deliberate, I don't really think that that is the most likely reason. They've hit all kinds of crap, civilians, and CRS. Someone just royally screwed up this time, and will probably have something bad happen...

Isn't that the most likely reason?

If you're not convinced:

Ok, so you're assuming that the secretary or Israeli official contacted actually knew how to respond and understood everything. The gears moved and then a decision followed through on to destroy the UN forces.

But why?

International Humiliation
A need to discharge ammunition
To weaken the world veiw of Israels plight
Because they actually precieved a threat
Desire to court marshal someone and possibly fire and official

Um, I don't think so. Really.

In every war there are always casualties, usually civilians. That is a fact of war. The nice thing about instant communications is people and institutions cannot lie so easily, they might get away with it once, but it is an embarassment when they get caught.
The UN has outlived its usefulness, that is also a hard pill to swallow because they are ineffective and have been for a long time.

Israelies are usually very careful about who they bomb, they would not have done this if there had'nt been a real reason. What are THEY saying?

The UN was supposed to be there to help disarm Hezbollah. It seems they missed some.

The other week, Hezbollah shot a UN worker who was then evacuated by the IDF. Funny you didn't mention that.

The only people who could move about in the war zone was the UN. They basically became an ambulance service. With as much artillery going into Hezbollah positions, it is amazing more UN personnel have not been hit. It is doubly amazing since Hezbollah is probably parking their rocket launchers right next to the UN positions. Its just the way they operate.

I believe it was an accident, but I also wish that Israel wouldn't care either way. The UN has done Israel no favors in fact they have done very little for the world in 30 years.

People die in war, that is the whole point of war. If you go into a war zone and get killed you have no one to blame but yourself.

They are already killing and wounding thousands of civilians who didn't do any harm to them "either in Lebanon or in Palestine"..
They attacked an Egyptian ship in the international waters and killed a captain......

So, does it matter to them.....

Or the people in the middle East are not human and killing them is legal????????

It is not new for the Israeli government???

I met Jewish while studying in UK-they are some how good, but those in Israel?????????????????/

Frankly Dd, I don't think ths murdering nation cares. they are covered by American diplomacy and therefore they act with impunity. Just listen to their speech and news bulletins. The arrogance is sickening.

They murdered a young British peace campaigner last year or so. Instead of the British Government holding them to account, it was left to the bereaved family to go to the lengths of the courts to get justice. they are nothing short of murdering thugs.
