I think because it's glorified in movies, music, eduation, television, personal stories... everywhere...
what do you remember about the years where there was no war? But in school they teach you all about the Revolutionary War, Civl War, WWI, WWII... you know almost everything that went on during those years... and the people and the presidents... they are the famous presidents...
but it's just not the U.S... it's that way everywhere to some degrees... but less in Europe, maybe because they have lost so much in wars...

I have to disagree with your thought that we American's do not understand the havoc that war creates. We understand it all to well, that is why we are willing to fight, BEFORE it reaches our shores. One thing you said is true however, " A large FRACTION of the Americans root for war". I am sure that you meant to say faction of the people, but that would be incorrect. Fraction 1/100000 would be about right.
Most Americans, and I would guesstimate about 99% of us, do not want a war anywhere in the world. We have seen wars terribleness here with the Revolutionary War and the Civil War being the worst. We are however are prepared for war, especially after having to bail Europe out twice in the last century. Our men and women fought and died for YOUR FREEDOM, and YOUR LAND to be returned to YOU. It is the fact that so many Europeans have forgotten this small matter that upsets Americans. We have been on the front line against aggressors since the last great war, and taken care to protect freedom and democracy worldwide, so we wouldn't have to fight in another one of EUROPES world wars. We Americans DO NOT ask for wars, but when we get involved in them, we FINISH THEM. And after we beat the crap out of the aggressor nations (recent past Germany, Japan, Italy) we go over and rebuild the places. Of those three, only Japan remembers and truely appreciates the terrible ferocity and kind heart of the American fighting man. Todays evil puppeteers in the Middle East (Iran, Syria) are about to the point where they are going to learn that lesson the hard way.
Concerning the Middle East, I really don't think that many of you comprehend what is actually taking place over there. Iran and Syria and to some extent the radicals in Saudia Arabia, are using people in places like Lebanon and the Palistinians to wage a semi covert war on democracy. They desire to unite and inflame the Muslim world to the point where it will be Muslims vs the West. Their goal is world domination by religion. If you do not believe what they tell you to believe, then off with the head. No trial, just do what they say or else. And I am sure that the radical religious leaders are having a really good laugh, watching western (and yes American) liberals fighting for their cause. If you don't believe what I've said above, just watch closely what has and will happen and think about why it is happening.

I would say that the American people are more supportive of the troops than of war itself. Using the present Iraq situation as an example, you'll find that most polls indicate that we aren't in favor of staying there, but if a question is asked about the troops, an overwhelmingly number of people are voicing their support of those men and women fighting... Personally, I'm not crazy about the whole situation, but we all have to admit that it will be worth it if peace is finally reached in the Middle East someday.

We American people are not supportive of war. We had no say in Bush's war on weapons of mass destruction.
To generalise - like you did is not fair. Why not ask why Australian's are more supportive.
Maybe some are - but definitely not the majority.
Plus you Aussies did not have 2 tall skyscrapers and the Pentagon blown up right in your face....
Do you think it is fair for you to sit back and watch the Al Queida go from country to country - killing anybody that happens to be in the wrong place????????????????

I disagree, I think the europeanse are use to have freedom and don't know what it takes to obtain freedom. The Iraqi people deserved to be freed. Not only is this good for the iraqis but good for the rest of the middle east. It will stir the pot there. More nations will hopefully embrase democracy.

I am an American and I for one do not support war. But I agree with you about war never really happining here. And that is why most Americans are all for war. It's sad really. And war is stupid. No one should be for war.

Most Americans do not support the Iraqi war, but if you are talking about Israel then they were attacked and have a right to defend themselves. You are real right war itself is barbaric but sometimes necessary to protect your people.

Americans think the war will never come to their hometown, so unless they are peace activists they support the war.
