There are too many things to list here (besides the normal, go to lakefront, parks, zoos, museums, blah blah blah) ...this website has all of the cultural things to do at all times...below are just a few examples....

The 49th Annual Venetian Night is set for Saturday, July 29,2006 with this year's theme "Rockin' All Over The World". The boat parade begins at 8:30 p.m. with the spectacular fireworks display synchronized to music provided by 93XRT, at 9:30 p.m.

Approximately 30 boats will be decorated with lights and props as they sail along beautiful Lake Michigan, between the Shedd Aquarium at Roosevelt Road and the Chicago Yacht Club at Monroe Street. People of all ages stake out spots along the lakefront as early as 9 a.m. to ensure a good view of the event. With an expected attendance of 675,000, public transportation, walking or biking to Venetian Night is suggested.

I have a two memberships, you can enroll for free:

www.triprewards.com

also:

www.bestwestern.com

It has several hotel affiliated to it in reasonable prices, from 50 to 120 the night.

Avoid the southern area, it gets a little "difficult" if you know what I mean, the northern suburbs are very nice, but a little more expensive.

You can see the pics and details of the hotels on line, and you can also call them and ask them question about the things to do in the area.

There are several museums that have free entrance on the weekends.

The Field has an Egyptian exhibit and they have Tutankhamen, "visiting" only the most famous Pharaoh of all times...

If you are looking for clubs, just make sure you avoid the southern area.

I suppose it depends on what you are looking for, but I would go to the Signature Room at the 95th for lunch. You don't have to pay for the observatory if you are going to eat the restaurant. You can see the entire city 95 floors up and have the lunch buffet for 18 dollars. It isn't exorbitant like many other nice restaurants in the area. If you want to see the city lights at night, go up to the lounge on the 96th and have a drink. There is no cover at all. Sunday has a really nice brunch but it is expensive so I would suggest going on Friday or Saturday.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "fun". I guess if you're entertained by "people watching", good food, and penny pinching you can do what my husband and I did when we first moved to Chicagoland.

First, we would find affordable all day parking. There is a lot close to Navy Pier, near Fox and Obel grocery store. There is a fantastic, inexpensive little restaurant attached to tje grocery store. They use all the gourmet food in the store to make the food for the restaurant. We'd walk down to Navy Pier, ride the ferris wheel, take pictures, then people watch. At lunchtime we'd go back to Fox and Obel, or we'd just eat ice cream from Ben and Jerry's at Navy Pier.

I live in Chicago, and I live by the web site below. Put in the dates, and it will tell you whats going on and how much it will cost.

I suggest looking at the metro. Tickets are really cheap, the red line goes RIGHT to wrigley field/metro area, and the bands are usually decent.
