A better question would be: why aren't there laws stopping people from being lazy and poor? Bring back the work houses and forced labor system.

Brian, why do you expect to have your question answered for free? Go pay for an education. Earn a Master's Degree. Then you will know your answer. Obviously you are lazy, and ignorant, and I would have to presume of some wealth. Tell you what ... you pay me 16K ($16,000.00 USD) and I will give you a 5 page paper on Socioeconomics and Criminology with sited works going back to the 1910s so that you can be informed. Then you can ask such questions. Baring that, it is not the poor who are lazy, but the rich who demand the work of other for free. That is also know as fraud, and theft.

P.S. It has been a few hours since I posted my answer, it is good to see that so many others are outraged by the stupidity posed in this question. Still, after 3 years of working on the web, writing, and research, there are still little in the way of decent work for people. I can only say that the web continue to perpetuate the fraud of stealing others ideas. Let's face it, we do the work and Yahoo gets the money from all the ads.

Sometimes I find it hard to believe that there are sooo many ignorant people.
They must all ask questions here on Yahoo.

Do you NOT SEE the idiocy in your statement?

Why not ask 'why are gay men so effeminate?'

or

'why are black men so angry?'

or

'why are muslims terrorists?'

The answer is simple. YOU CANNOT PUT A LABEL ON A GROUP OF PEOPLE.
Not all gay men are effeminate. Not all black people are angry. Not all Muslims are terrorists. Certainly you can find examples of each amongst the aforementioned groups, but that in no way proves that all members of that group have the same attributes.

Try this bit of logic: A person you've known for many years, a person you have eaten meals with, a person you have socialized with in public, is arrested, tried & convicted of rape. Does that mean that you are a rapist also?

No. A rapist is a rapist because of the heinous crime they committed.

Being poor doesn't mean that you are lazy.
It means that you are poor.
It also means that ignorant people will blame you for all of society's ills.

Please. Don't be ignorant.

(Did it work?)

Poor people are not the lazy ones. They are the ones out there busting their asses for the measley amount of money that the "rich" think is fair. In order for a person to make $30,000 annually, which is what it takes to support a family with ONE child, the minimum wage would need to be $14.42. Hmmmm, why are rich people so greedy?

I have often wondered the same thing. I believe it's because here in America the poor are seen as victims of something, so the government gives them all they need to life, thus they have no need to get up and go get a job.

The hardest working people in the world are poor. Why don't you get off your a** and travel around for a little while and see for yourself. My guess is that you've had everything nice and comfortable your whole life and think that all of your advantages are a result of your "hard work."

I have a couple issues with that question. (1) The single most accurate indicator of a person's wealth is the wealth of that person's parents -- not hard work, not wise choices, not education, but the pure accident of being born into the moneyed class. (2) You get what you pay for. It's unrealistic to expect people to be gung-ho about work when it is so often poorly rewarded.
