They can do it for many different reasons. One in their own mind they are trying to hurt the woman, another they feel that they are the better parent and can take better care of the child and last because they want too.

Why do women that go through a divorce think that they have to hurt their ex by keeping the kids?
They are his kids too, not just hers as the previous answer thinks.

Wow, I wont report this, but for any interested man, this question is sure to incite hate or violence in violation of the YA rules.
If the guy is in a position to keep the kids it is because the mom sucks! She is a whore, a drug addict, mentally ill, severely immature, financially reckless, or some variation thereof.
A woman that believes what you just asked is simply in a narcissistic fantasy world where she does not see the truth of the situation.
Most women get custody, about 85%. Most guys don't even try to get custody unless there is a reason.

This isn't just guys that do this it is both parents and the only ones who are hurt in it are the kids. Kids need both parents and a divorce is just as hard on them as the adults but the key word is adult, we know what we are doing the kids don't. The ones who do this are just being selfish and irresponsible as parents.

In my own personal case and divorce, the reason for me wishing to have custody of my daughter, and not fought about between us was for our daughters own health, well being and stability. I wouldn't want to hurt my ex. In fact, I wish her well, I hope she does well in all areas of her life truly! The fact remained in our case, that I had built a more stable lifestyle more conducive to raising a daughter... Single, owning a home in a fantastic school district, a reliable car, stable employment, decent income, and love my daughter beyond words. I've always had more patience than my ex when it came to raising my girl as well. All of this compared to what she has right now, we both mutually agreed that even if we set aside our own desires, what's best for her - our daughter is for her to be with me. I hope that whatever the reason is that your ex is using that you both make the divorce as "clean" as it can be, and always keep the childrens best interests in mind... regardless of how one of you might feel personally. Children are not pawns to be used for bartering in a divorce. They are real people, with real feelings, and real memories of what mom and dad are going through now. I wish you all the best of luck in your situation.

They are probably trying to scare or manipulate the woman by threatening to keep her kids.

It's has to do w/ their stupidity. They like being in control. So they think by taking the kids -- they have control over you.

It wouldn't hurt so much if they just wanted the house, or car. And unfortunately, that seems to be the main motive........
