You should probably call him by his first name. But in truth I think you should just call him your brother unless you need to specify the relationship which would indeed be paternal or maternal half-brother or half-sister.

If you share one parent with the person than they are your half brother or sister

Why does it matter, at that point you are siblings, --brother or sister, drop the rest of the label. It will make life better.
