I am going to a baby's first birthday party this Saturday and want to make her a simple sundress out of some cute cloth I have. I don't need a pattern, I can make one myself, but I don't know how large babies usually are at age one. I know all babies are different, but a general range of height, either from neck down (better) or top of head down (also good) would be great, as well as any waist measurements or any measurements around the torso...someone has to know this sort of thing, I figure, although I can't find it online. Thanks!

I would suggest you check out a fabric store and read the back of patterns. However, you should know that patterns run a lot larger than ready-made clothes. A one year old would likely need 18 mo. to 2T sizes in ready-made, but maybe a 9 month size in patterns. So adjust it accordingly.

I've been there, the easiest way is to call and ask her size, then head off to the children's dept with a tape measure and measure a dress in a similar style, or look up a pattern in that size on www.simplicity.com and use the measurements from the back of the envelope

according to simplicity, size one is chest 20in waist 19.5in approx height 31 inches (from the head down) size two is chest 21 waist 20 height 34...

when in doubt borrow the child and do a muslin mock up

There is a rule of thumb with baby clothes that you double the age. Example 6 months buy 12 month clothes. There are some exceptions those babies that are really big or small.

A one year old can be anywhere from 18 to 22+ pounds. All 3 of my kids were 20 lbs , my sisters little boy was 19. It just depends some babies are bigger than others.

honestly all babies are different sizes your best bet would be to ask the mom. if you are worried it will give away the surprise, it wont, she wont know what it looks like. i can tell you that my daughter is 31 inches tall (from top of head down) but she is really small for her age.

well.. my suggestion is have a visit to the baby..
you can make it taller and bigger(the dress)because children grow up very fast.if you make the dress that only fits the baby, after few months, the baby couldn't wear the dress again..If you make a lot of dresses for the baby, you can make some are bigger sizes, and are only fit's the baby size..that's all..
