What is it with people adding an 's' to Spencer?

Marks and Spencer were two friends who opened their first shop in Leeds, England. Marks was his surname like Jones or Matthews- not plural. I work in M&S and as far as I'm aware there is no decision to change the name, 'Your M&S' is a piece of marketing.

They're adding a collective noun, like I'm going down to Jim and Sally's house.

well Marks is plural, were there 2 of them? Was their only one Spencer? Should it be Mark and Spencer or are we talking the past participal pronoun of the company Mr Mark and Mr Spencer began, in which case it belonged to Mark and Spencer and was therfore the property of Mark and Spencer and therefore Marks and Spencers, plural................ hey, who gives a ****?.... I love their knickers!!!!

I think it is difficult because people say the 's' on the Marks and so they just automatically add it onto Spencer. Also, Spencer begins with s

I think its just instinct or habit really.

Its like people call it Marks and Sparks - its just easier to say, and Marks and Spencers is easier to say when it has an s on the end, overwise you have to think to not say the s, and I don't think most people will be bothered to do that.

Anyway, they are changing it to Your M&S soon, if this new ad stuff continues.
