I live where yellow jacket wasps live in the ground (as well as nesting in other places.) I am seriously allergic to them & have to give myself a shot with an EpiPen when I get stung, so I really want to get rid of them! We have gotten disposible traps (available at feed stores, garden stores, Home Depot, etc,) and have had good luck with them. You hang the traps in trees or bushes, and you add water to them. There is an attractant in the trap that draws the wasps, and they enter through the little holes in the trap, can't get back out, and eventually drown. We have drastically reduced the yellow jacket population by this method. My son took personal offense at getting stung, and he sprayed several cans of flying insect poison down a big nest. That worked pretty well, too.

Use a bleach and soap mix, kills on contact and is pretty safe to use. Since there nest is in the ground, pour it in at night. You can use a Hornet/Wasp spray if you think there is a chance they'll swarm, but I doubt it. Anyway, good luck!!

We have done this-- (mark the hole with something nearby so you can find it at night)--We took a gallon of gas, poured it in the hole and set it on fire with a match--
STAND BACK__Some of the insects will fly out of the hole on fire-(more than likely)--this will kill the nest while they are asleep --
USE SEVERE CAUTION if you do this==I assume that you are an adult-and if you are not--do not even attempt this=
Make sure you are way back out of the way after doing this---some of these hateful things have two holes to their nest--and will come after you-

If you are brave ..pour gas down the hole. You do not need to light it on fire. The gas will kill them. Only do this at night or after sunset. Since they have gone into the nest for the night you will get almost all of them.
