They aren't venomous (actually, I'm pretty sure they do possess a mild venom, but then, so do garter snakes, but in the typical sense they are NOT venomous, since they have no way to deliver it)... They can be pretty nasty however, and don't make very good pets. They secrete a foul-smelling musk when disturbed, and will not hesitate to bite. Most Nerodia (water snake) species have anti-coagulants in their saliva, meaning that, even though you aren't "envenomated," you can bleed for quite a while, increasing the chance of infection. Best to either leave it alone or find a safe place to relocate it.

No, they are nonvenomous; 30 - 60 inches. Basic color varies from reddish-brown to pinkish- gray, depending how recently it has shed its skin. This snake prefers a wet environment, but during rainy weather may travel a long distance from water. Feed on frogs, toads, and fish. These aggressive snakes will vigorously defend themselves by biting and discharging a foul-smelling musk.

No, this snake is totally harmless. The only way it can make you sick would be if you contracted salmonella from handling the snake's poop, which is very rare. Just be careful cleaning up after the snake & always wash your hands after handling any reptile.

Not having pits does not mean that it is not venomous. What you found might have been a mud snake. The only truly venomous water snake is the cottonmouth.

Did you find it because if you did you should let it go. And if you really want a snake, do some research then buy one.
