It may sound wierd, but I think love is a manifestation of fear, the fear of losing the object of affection. When we become attached to someone, it is because they supply us with something that we need. We don't want to lose that, so we do what we can to maintain the relationship, and the entailing actions are what we might call the behaviors of love. If you were totally self-sufficient, love would have no purpose.
