It all depends on what sort of captain you want. David Beckham was not the most talkative but being a World Star he 'led' in what he did, a bit like Zidane for France.
Some captains are in the John Terry/Bryan Robson role, really hard fighters who gee a team up from their performances.
Some are the talkers, organisers of the team.
My personal preference, providing he will be around for the next campaign in the managers plans is Gary Neville. From whats known, and heard about him he is the organiser on and off the pitch. Terry, Ferdinand, Becks have all said in interviews Gary organises the team, the defence on set pieces etc and is missed when he doesnt play. He is also very good in interviews, dealing with the press, confident etc. and highly experienced. For the future John Terry and Stevie G will be fighting for it.
The only thing to add is that with 11 great players on the field at once, many are club captains already or are vocal like Rooney so really its not vital to have a captain as such. But whoever it is is a representative of the country and Gary Neville would fit that role too.

Steven Gerrard because he is passionate about Football he is exactly the same when playing with Liverpool or England, plus he is an awesome Footballer which is a bonus, and I am sure all the rest of the team will respect him if he was made Captain just like they do now. If you need any more persuasion just look what he did in Istanbul I know it was a team effort but we are talking about Leadership and he has got that in spades, look how many games he played last season before the World Cup even started, once you have done all I have suggested I am sure you will agree with me. England`s New Captain only one choice and that's STEVEN GERRARD.

Not Terry.
Sooner or later referees will discover that challenging a striker with your arms wide open isn't natural, and if th ball hits your arm, it's handball. Imagine this happening in a crucial game... Want to see how excellent defending is done? Look at Cannavaro.
G. Neville is dependable, wields influence and is vocal, but however, this would be just a temporary solution; will he still be a starter in South Africa?
Rooney can't control his own temperament yet; he may be one for the future given his passion and commitment.
Gerrard would be a good choice; however the formation that will be chosen will be critical. Gerrard and Lampard cannot be together at the heart of a 4 man midfield. So he might be better off without captaincy, unless the formation is changes say to a 4-3-3 with Hargreaves as holding midfielder, allowing Gerrard (and Lampard) to attack more. But that's unlikely.
In sum I would go for G. Neville for the time being and see how Rooney develops. If he matures fast enough he should take over once G. Neville ends his international career.

In my opinion i think Gerard should be the next England captain it's not because I'm a Liverpool fan it's just that he show good leadership better than any other players in the team and most of the time he scores he already show he can do the job 4 Liverpool why not give him a chance?

one obvious choice is gary neville, as a scotsman watching as a neutral, i can see that the one person in the current england team who commands the utmost respect is gary neville. he is a guy who has played for numerous years at international level and knows what is required. john terry, although proved himself at club level, still has not got the experience at international level to be considered as an international captain.
plus, with a 100% fit jonathon woodgate, terry would not even make the england starting eleven.
