My nephew is just over 4 months and he head is HUGE! My brother's girlfriend said even the doctor told her that the rest of his body is in the 50% range for average but his 25% bigger than normal. I would like to know if his big head is linked to some other mental illness or retardation problem.

Would the doctors just come out and test for it if they think something is wrong- or is it up to the parents to ask the doctor to test if they think something isnt right.

His head size just does not seem normal and I am really concerned and dont want to hurt my brothers feelings by asking if something is wrong with his kid.

Any adivse on this matter is welcomed- Thanks!

ok, I understand that a babies head will be bigger than the rest of the body and they will eventually grow into it, but his head is VERY BIG compared to the rest of his body. Co-workers comment on his head size when they see pictures. A few of them asked me to tell my brother to get him checked cuz it seems too big.

I think that anything of this nature would have been addressed by the pediatrician. They measure head circumference at each well visit and have a chart of what falls between the 5th percentile and the 95th percentile-all of this range is considered normal. So, my daughter has a head in the 25 th percentile and if your nephew is in the 95th percentile, it will look so much bigger than other babies and much bigger than his still growing body. I am sure that he is fine! As a side note, it does not mean any type of mental retardation-if it is anything worrisome, it might be hydrocephalus (water on the brain) which is a life threatening event and would have already caused some sort of neurological problems. If he hasn't had any problems, I think he is probably OK. Maybe your brother should ask the doctor for an explanation.

Both of my boys had large heads when they were infants. You're correct...the head usually is bigger than the rest of the body for a while.

My younger son's head was so large, his pediatrician recommended an ultrasound. It was pretty cool...they do it through the soft spot to check the brain for swelling, etc. It turns out he's just fine...his big head is just that...a big head. :) Now that he's a year old, I've noticed he's seeming to be a bit more proportional.

No it isn't! A child's head is going to be bigger than his or her body until they become adults. It's not a sign of mental retardation, mental illness, or any of that. As long as the baby's healthy and is developing properly, the kid's gonna have a big assed head! Who knows? He might be a genius.

not always. the baby needs to be tested for hydrocephalus. some children do not suffer any issues from this, some do. he may not even have this problem and may grow into his head eventually. our son seemed a little top heavy when he was about two or so. he didn't test positive for the hydro, tho, and now his head is proportionate.

The brain grows rapidly faster then any other part of the body. Maybe he is just a smaller build person and he is just going to have a larger head. If the doctor doesn't see a problem with it then it should be fine.

Actually no it means no such thing. Most children have big heads, they just have to grow into them, kind of like the rest of their bodies are a little to small with the way it looks. If the child was not diagnosed when the child was born of mental disabilities the child is just fine.

Have them take him to a pediatrician...my son has a big head...but apparently he got that from my mother and I. Take your concerns to the Dr...that's what they are there for...My ultrasounds showed that my baby has a big head...relax..there's probably nothign wrong

Absolutely not...................... unless there is real cause for consern like slo developement ,then dont worry this child is probably very inteligent. If the Dr. suspected anything he would bring it up yo them and give them opyions for tests..........but there is the rare Dr. that wont. If you are really worried, then simply ask the parents how his last visit went because he seems to be a verry smart baby .....................i hope i helped you
