OK I have read all the other responses, but Ill tell you this one is really cool.
Take a "small" fluorescent light tube, IE small enough to fit in the microwave. If it fits at an angle that's OK. Turn the microwave on and the tube will begin giving out light as if it were on. Not dangerous at all in my experience.
Also if you change the power setting from 10 or high to say, 4. you will see that the tube will go on for a while and then off and keep repeating at the same intervals. That's because microwaves do not lower the power output on lower settings, they just pulse the energy at intervals.
I show this stuff to friends and kids all the time.
Good luck.

Someone I know was short of time and put his boxer shorts in the microwave to dry. He popped out for a minute and a neighbour noticed smoke and called the fire brigade. Made the local paper to everyone amusement who knew him.

A lit candle with two charred toothpicks pushed in to the top on opposite sides. When you find the microwaves hot spots it will create plasma.

Best one i've seen is to fill a glass half full of water and put in a light bulb (with the bulb jutting out of the milk) .... It lights up!
