They believe what they believe because for the most part they are economically and intellectually pathetic and are arrogant people who lead mostly inconsequential lives. Having no personal accomplishments to their names they invent a reason to feel good about themselves that requires no effort on their part. The same is true of any variety of bigot. Essentially they try to take credit for the achievements of a few extraordinary individuals by association on the basis of being members of the same group.
Religion...the abrahamic religions (judaism, chrsitianity, isIam) all have convenient scriptures asserting the right of gods chosen people to do whatever the f-ck they please to whoever they please. There's stuff in the old testament that was used as an after the fact justification for the Israelite conquest of the Canaanites. The sons of Ham, the bits condoning slavery etc. all that crap has been commandeered by racists to suit their own purposes.

There will always be people thinking themselves better than others, no matter what you do. And as just about everyone who has a pet hatred, they will try to find a way to legitimize it, at the very least in their own eyes.
Interpreting religious teachings for their own purposes is only one of the many ways that supremacist groups use to validate their beliefs.
Make no mistake, what is done here is what most followers of a religion would think of as being objectionable at the very least. Also, especially white supremacists, come from the belief that that people of Caucasian descent are superior to others, quite likely because the colonies that survived to this day because they were originally set up by Europeans. If anything, it only means that only Europeans had the disposition and the means to establish permanent colonies in foreign lands and the imperialistic outlook that led them to place themselves above the local populations.
Also, going back centuries if not millenniums, those who took slaves generally took slaves who were of a different ethnic backgrounds, if only to have the ability to see themselves as being superior to some other ethnicity.
