I would think that common sense is something that's going over the side mainly because our society, quite likely due to mass media, is starting to think less and less for itself, and therefore the individual finds itself unable to come up with viable options that would fall under "common sense".
As for taking the bullet, that I can't give a societal answer for. But the inability to own up to one's mistake, I think, is due to character flaws that are becoming more common. Lacks in personal discipline, willpower and honesty and the general fear of screwing up are what lead people to try and avoid paying for their mistakes.

Too many people have seen others get off the hook by blaming somebody else for their mistakes... they won't accept that they did it or that possibly is was NOBODY'S fault.
And if there is even the hint of a monetary award for "pain and suffering"... they're pushing their way up front to collect.

Because no one likes to be held accountable any more. It is too hard to stop and think first. Much easier to just do it and blame bad results on anything, or anyone, else.
