It wasn't clear whether he felt it was wrong to leave a marriage in general or it was wrong to leave the marriage because of the child. I assume it is the latter.

In this case, he needs to think about the child. Will the child be better off in a family with an unhappy parent and another who is mentally cruel? Or would the child be better off in a single parent arrangement?

Tough choice.

If he won't leave then I guess he puts up with it cause those are the choices. So I say either accept being miserable or grow a spine and move on. By the way this is a horrible environment in which to raise a child, a child raised by a mentally cruel mother will be mentally cruel to the people in his life.

He have to do whats best for him.If you are unhappy why stay with that person and continue to feel the same way.I would find out what made me unhappy see if it could be fixed and if not move on.You can take care of the child and still be in that child's life without being with the mother. But, see what went wrong and when it went wrong first and try to work it out.If you still feel the unhappiness then you have to do whats best for you.

If she is mentally cruel to him then chances are that she is the same way with the child and as a responsible parent he should take himself and the child out of that situation.

~ I'm not trying to be rude, but in my marriage, things get better if it gets back to "us." Having kids is hard enough, but with friends always in the picture it makes things hard. If she feels you are "meddling" it makes it worse on him. They need some time alone, to regain their bond. If she is mentally cruel to him as you say, he needs to stand up, be a man and tell her to chill out, take a prozac, or he might leave. NOONE should ever be treated badly by someone that they love! It's nice that you care, but maybe he likes to be controlled. People do have strange relationships. And it is wrong to leave if his heart is telling him not to.

i'm coming from experience from both my childhood and currently in my marriage. it is not worth wasting one day of your life not being as happy as you possibly can. i've spent my whole life unhappy and i'm just now starting to realize it. as for your child...i would have been much happier as a child not seeing my father treat my mother with absolutely no love or kindness.

Being unhappy is no reason to leave a marriage.

Now being married to a self-center selfish person may be. He needs to make a determination here.
