I am from India. We like to be called East Indian because we are not Native Americans (Indians in America). We are also called Asians because India is on the continet of Asia.

Indian is the proper term but they like to be called East Indians and the proper term for Indians from America is American Indians or Native Americans. Blame Columbus for that nice little mistake.

Years ago when I was growing up, they were referred to as East Indians but over time that became incorrect. In recent years I have heard them called Indian Americans, to distinguish them from American indians who are Native Americans.

I heard about referring to Indians as Indians Americans but it seems odd.

I'd Go with East Indian or Asian
