There are no grammatical rules as to how to abbreviate words or group of words. Follow the standard practice. Examples :

ad, advert for advertisement.

NATO for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. (composed of the initial letters)

SCUBA for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.
SONAR for SOund NAvigation Ranging.
RADAR for RAdio Detecting And Ranging.

We also abbreviate words to take note quickly in class room or conferences. So that we don't have to write each word and wasting time!

Abbreviate words when you don't feel like spelling them out.

Avoid those that can have multiple meanings too.
