My floors are in horrible shape. Stripping - would it even be worth it? Or should I go for something different and new?

Wow, I thought you were asking a different question.

I assume you are referring to wooden floors, and will address response on that basis.

It generally would be worth it, HOWEVER, if it hasn't been sanded too many times, and the wood is in good shape, I would probably sand it with a rented floor sander. You may need some extra sanding sheets, make sure to drive any exposed nails down before sanding. Any small holes can be fill with a wood putty of a similar color, applied and allowed to dry before the second sanding, done with a finer grit sand paper.

When I say good shape, I mean with minimal or no rot, and little or no termite damage. If you have a lot of soft spots, you may need to overlay the floor, preferably with a plywood, then a floor covering such as linoleum, tile, carpet, or even a synthetic wood(some are reasonably priced and very durable). You may need a product called floor-sand to level the floor before an overlay. It will help level the floor for the overlay, and won't shrink like drywall plaster.

After sanding, it is pretty easy to seal with a polyurethane based product. Polyurethane is very durable. If you rent a floor sander, make sure you get one than can get close to the walls without damaging them or any baseboards.

If you have tongue and groove flooring, and it is buckling a bit, you can reduce that problem by running a circular saw down the lines of the flooring, about half the thickness of the flooring. Then sand and polyurethane.

If you have hard wood floors it would probably be worth it but I would hire a pro to do it. Get a couple outfits to come in and quote it they will tell you if it's worth it.

I would go to a Home Depot and ask them what they think would be the best idea for your floor. Tell them what you want to do to it and they will help you out.
