Just for sheer shock value, there are many "quality" blood and guts horror films. But if you want a good story line, generally very good acting, and an abundant amount of suspense mixed in as well, you cannot go wrong with films made from the Stephen King Books. 2 personal favorites of mine are " Pet Sematary" (yes, that is how it is spelled), and "christine"...Again, this is a very subjective question, and each will interpret a "favorite" in a different manner. Just my two cents worth

I love the old Alfred Hichcock, nothing comes close. Horror films now are rubbish compared to 40 years ago. The Birds and original Psycho. The new Psycho is c.r.a.p.

I really like the oldies, anything with Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee. The're not really scary, but they are great to watch.
I did enjoy the Hellraiser films though.

The Thing (from another world). Not the Carpenter remake, but the original, directed by Christian Nyby, from 1950.
