to "everybody loves chris" , I just meant that this is a UK based question, therefore the time would be different, asshole.

You have probably seen the posting that ignorant people keep propagating, about Mars making its closest pass in recorded history in August. Unfortunately, you've missed it; that was in 2003. The next, slightly less bright passage of Mars occurs in December of 2007.

You don't really need a UK-specific timetable to know when to look for a planet, as the sky is on local time. Consider the Sun - no matter where you are, go out at noon, look South, and there it is.

Go to skyandtelescope.com and select Observing-Sky at a glance to see what's up.

Also, if you possess anything less than a 10 inch telescope, forget it. To the vast majority of us, Mars at its very closest, like in 2003, still just looks like a very bright star, albeit very red.

It is never as bright as the magnificent Venus, and only very occasionally gets brighter than Jupiter.

So, please don't get hyped up about close approaches of Mars. There's enough great things in the sky to take your fancy all the time, if you know where to look.

No, this is an urban legend. The close approach was in 2003. The same tired email is still circulating. It will never be close enough to see as large as the full Moon. It never was and never will be.
