You know the part of the keyboard with only the numbers? (Not the ones above the letters) Well that parts not working unless you hold down alt then type some #'s, if you do that it shows weird symbols. What the heck is going on? Can you please tell me how to fix this?

Here's what's happening.

When you hold alt and press the numbers on the numeric keypad, you generate wierd symbols depending on the code you put in. There are more symbols we use than there are keys on the keyboard, so the lesser used symbols (like the cents sign, or the degrees symbol) are made accessable through the code. There's a list of these in Character Map. It's how I used to make symbols before Microsoft Word put in a "symbol" function.

Instead of using your numeric keypad, you are inserting the alt code for a special character. Try pressing the "Num lock" button to unlock your numeric keypad. It's probably on the num pad. If the light is on, it should work. If you're on a laptop or something with a small keyboard, there's a button you have ot press (maybe "Fn") that's right NEAR the alt button.

Look for a key marked Num Lock and press it. If that does not work, (and it is a desktop) you probably need to buy a new keyboard. Sounds like it is broken.

The "weird symbols" you get from typing alt+a number is a standard way of typing symbols for which there is no key. If you go to the start button, select RUN and type in: charmap it will open a window where you can see all those symbols and their codes.

Your number lock has to be on to use that pad. If that doesn't work, you have a problem with your keyboard.
