I'm only 6 weeks pregnant but I have a persistent cough. Not only is it driving nuts and making my throat sore, but I'm afraid that if I cough hard enough I may hurt the baby! My mother says "Take a spoonful of lemon juice and honey," but that works only to soothe my throat and not even for a long time. Any suggestions or advice? No fever and the occassional runny nose, but thats it.

Will the coughing hurt the baby, cause a miscarriage, or do something just as damaging? Or is it safe to wait it out?

Firstly this is safe for your baby, you will not harm them with coughing so don't worry. I had at least 4 colds thru out my pregnancy and my daughter is happy and healthy.

For right now, natural remedies are best to help sooth your throat but Halls and Vicks are okay to take.

You are best to talk to your doctor if it is really bothering you.

Good luck

I got a list of safe meds to take from my OB, and it says the for cough and sore throat, you can take Robitussin DM for the cough, and gargle with Cepacol or Listerine for sore throat. I like the Robitussin because it quiets my cough quickly, and keeps it away for awhile.

Call Labor and Delivery at your local hospital and ask a nurse what is safe for you to take.

Never ask about medication online to a bunch of strangers because they can do more harm than good.

Or call your OB doctor and speak to a nurse there.
