of fallen soldiers. Waiving signs that say things like "thank God for IEDs". I have no problem with protesting the war that is your right but I have a serious problem with protesting at the funerals of service men and women who have died in the service of our country.

BTW yes I agree that protesting at the funerals of people who have died of AIDS is just as sick and just as wrong. I don't care who the person was or what they did in their life protesting at the funeral is not free speech it abridging the free speech of the people who are mourning at the funeral. The ACLU is (as always) on the wrong side of this issue. I also don't care if these animals are conservative they are wack jobs and have no right to intrude on the funeral of anyone.

No, Ethan M, I am not surprised. They have defended the rights of pediphile men to molest boys, too. Misguided supporters of the ACLU seem to believe that everything is relative, that right and wrong are merely personal points of view. They use the law like a tool to achieve their destuctive social change goals instead for achieving justice.

I believe they are a nonprofit organization that is supported by private donations. I would like to get a list of the donors to see who supports the ACLU. I wonder how such a list could be made public for the world to see.

The ACLU is not always on the wrong side. They defend the civil rights of all Americans, whether they agree with them or not. It's the only way to be fair. Sure, cases like this get the most coverage in the news, but they don't seek out those cases for that reason. They take on all civil rights cases, big or small, but the big controversial ones are the ones you hear about.

I disagree just as strongly as you do with what Phelps and the rest of the Westboro church members are saying, but I don't disagree with the ACLU's efforts to defend everyone's rights to free speech, even when they may disagree just as strongly as we do with what's being said. I hope someone will find a legal and nondiscriminatory way to keep these people at a more respectful distance from funerals, but they can't be silenced completely because that's not the American way.

Fred Phelps owns the place, hes an anti-semetic nazi. I even emailed the leader of this "church" and they havne't replied for 4 months. I even posted bible verses preaching against what they are doing.

The ACLU is a corrupted organization. They don't want to protect our rights they want to make money by su'ing the government, donations, or whatever. We need a new organization that actually protects the rights of the people of america. ACLU is corrupted and dead.

I made a thread about this subject too, it is just unbelievable the ACLU will defend protest at SOLDIERS' funerals. There is a time and a place for everything political, not at funerals.

The only way to stop these animal protesters is for the mainstream media stops paying attention. If all of them stopped reporting on this story then they will eventually fade away.

The ACLU does things like this to make a point I think. They like defending these types to show that all speech, even that which we hate is protected. If it wasn't in the news, the ACLU wouldn't be involved. They like the coverage.

The protesters quit protesting at gay funerals because it didn't give them enough press. They are protesting soldier's funerals because it gives them more press for their agenda.

Actually, I think protesting at someones funeral is a detestable thing and there should be civil suits filed against the protesters for mental duress or something. Funerals are for the families and they have been through enough without that added to it.

I really would not mind it if someone went over there and gave them a nice ***-kicking for doing it. At least a bit of pepper spray. There is no price to be paid for being an *** so people keep doing it.

It is reprehensible that a supposed civil liberties group would find it necessary to protest at a funeral. It is at a time in a family's life that they are trying to find comfort and support in each other coping with the loss of a family member. Why must this organization find it necessary to protest at a funeral .You would think that they would be able to support their position on FACTS not by trying to manipulate a funeral into a media circus.Do the members of ACLU realize they are infringing upon the rights of someone else? It is ironic that the freedoms that the ACLU want to enforce are the very values and rights that were. and are.gained by the shedding of blood and loss of life.FREEDOM is never free. I would hold suspect any group that must resort to "dirty politics" to make a point. How can the ACLU defend freedom when they have NO RESPECT for it.

The ACLU are doing their job but I'm with you. If they want to protest, fine, that is their right. But not at the funerals of those who lost their lives defending the right to voice an opinion. Just because we have freedom of speech, that doesn't mean we can infringe on others freedom of privacy.

I also don't believe they should be protesting at the funerals of gay men and women, or any other funerals. Let these families grieve. There is a time and place for everything and this is not the place for protests.

When I first started seeing this on the news I was appalled. I feel for those families who are grieving and have to deal with such heartlessness.

The ACLU is defending free speech. Y'know, the very thing we claim to be bringing to Iraq, whether it wants it or not. They are not defending the content of the message. However, they make a very convenient whipping boy for non -educated people who want to be popular - like you.

Grow up. The 1st Amendment applies to everyone.

That being said, the privacy and other rights of the berieved merit reasonable restricitons on the hate speech being spewed by Fred Phelps and his in-bred morons.

No, it does not surprise me at all. But, while I wholeheartedly agree that Fred Phelps and his decidedly self righteous views and opinions are amazingly socially retarded, he has the right, in this country, to say what he wants, as long as others are not harmed by them. The dispute comes into play because we are allowing bad form to take center stage. I completely agree it is morally reprehensible, BUT no matter how much we disagree with him and his associates, he definitely has the right to protest whatever he wishes. Why, I could go out tomorrow and protest bunnies and babies if I wanted. It is my right as a United States citizen to do so, no matter how misguided and delusional it may seem to others.
The ACLU has perpetually been on the hit list of conservatives.
While I do not always agree with all of the cases they decide to take, I admire their resolve in standing up for the little guy.
If it weren't for them the conservatives in the South of yesterday would have been triumphant in banning teaching the theory of evolution in southern schools, (which is still a hot button issue among the Christian Right), blacks would not be able to attend public schools with whites, police would have unhampered ability to harass the citizenry, among others.
So, before knee jerk reactions, know what you are talking about.
It seems to me you have swallowed the line of the neocons who have sold you a line of crap. As always.

PLEASE PROVIDE PROOF OF THIS ACCUSATION.

FROM THE LINK PROVIDED BY ETHAN M...........
"The American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Jefferson City on behalf of the fundamentalist Westboro Baptist Church, which has outraged mourning communities by showing up at soldiers' funerals with anti-homosexual signs. The church and the Rev. Fred Phelps claim God is allowing soldiers, coal miners and others to be killed because the United States tolerates homosexuals."

INTERESTING HOW YOU HAVE SPUN WHAT YOUR ORIGINAL QUESTION POSED. NICE BACKPEDDLING.
YOU STATED YOUR QUESTION AS THOUGH IT WAS A WAR ISSUE BUT CHANGED ONCE THE TRUTH CAME OUT ABOUT YOUR FUNDAMENTALIST FRIENDS.
I AM KEEPING A CLOSE WATCH ON YOU!

Strange, but no one seemed to mind or even notice when these people picketed the funerals of gay men and women who died of AIDS. It's a detestable thing, but it's their right to picket wherever they choose, and it's kind of a sad commentary that people are only "up in arms" about this now that they're picketing military funerals instead of gay men and women.
