This is part of what makes baseball great, that so few teams make the playoffs. It makes the regular season meaningful, whereas the NBA and NHL seasons don't really start until the playoffs.

Also, baseball plays a 162-game schedule, which is more than enough to seperate the contenders and pretenders. With that many games allowed to help sort out your league, there's no need to open up the playoffs to more teams.

Not too long ago there were only four teams total, two to a side. But since the creation of the wild card and the central divisions we are now blessed with eight teams in the post season. I think this is totally fair. In basketball and hockey (and football for that matter) we see teams that don't even have winning records (sub .500) entering the playoffs. The reason for this, I think, is money$$. Baseball and football pretty much have a good television market the way it is. Basketball and hockey are less popular nationwide. Only the games that mean something would be watched by the common bystander. So the more games that mean something, the more viewers, the more televised games, the more sponsors and advertisements, and more money for the networks and the franchises.

Baseball is the only sport that has it right. Letting only eight teams into the playoffs after a 162 game schedule is fair. If they were to double that total, they'd be playing games in the middle of November, and many cities are too cold for baseball by then... That's not the primary reason why baseball allows fewer teams, but I wanted to add my thoughts to those people who have previously responded.

The other leagues play fewer games than MLB. Think about it. The NBA and NHL play somewhere around 80 games give or take. MLB plays 162 games a year from April to early October. Would you really like to see the teams play in November when it gets cold. It sometimes gets very cold in October. I would not want to watch baseball while the snow is flying around. Changing the format and extending the post-season that far would not be wise.

Turn your CAPS OFF, it is the equivalent of screaming.

No, Baseball has it right, the other sports have it all wrong. All 3 seasons are very long, there is no reason to let 50% of the teams participate in the playoffs.

The season is played for a reason. Nothing is more exciting than a pennet race. Try to imagine that excitement for a basketball team trying to be the 7th seed.
