I like contemporary Christian music - it directs my focus toward God and off me so I can worship and seek Him in all situations. When I am down, listening to music lifts me up, and when I things are okay it makes me even happier and more thankful. The words are very important - but sometimes the right kind of music works too. Music with a Godly message calms my thoughts and fears, quiets my spirit and energizes me ! Try it!

The words have to tell a story in their own way. I don't care for the dog died, wife left, cry in my beer type of songs.

I like Audioslave and Nickelback. They have very good stories within their music. I also like the song "Had a Bad Day" even though every radio station in the nation played it so much I started to hate it. I liked the video that went with the song.

Videos are a big seller of music. If an image can be put with the sound it makes the song even better. I don't care for the half naked women shaking everything in front of the camera or the artist to be all up in the camera either.

Stories that come from within the artist and relay the life that person has lived or witnessed someone else experience are the best.

As long as I enjoy the sound and the lyrics don't offend me. Certain lyrics are okay if it's in the context of storytelling or to prove a point. I don't really require that a lyric speak to me in any special way. You can say the most beautiful thing but if it's not delivered properly, I won't listen to it.

Did anyone really give a frig what Mozart was saying? Music isn't just about lyrics.

In music you can hear lots of meanings. I always what the "handclaps" were doing in hip-hop/rap cause these people would actually be way to "hip" to clap along to snycopated pattern-lol! You hear age-group genres, you hear various styles of rebellionism -grunge, thrash, punk, metal ie; "you got another thing comin' " etc, what meanings are these, you do drugs to be cool? Um, Ben Folds, sensitive, - Pink Floyd, Blue Man, Green Day(?) lol! the alienation of individuals trapped in social mazes...

Then of course you might actually hear some lyrics that mean things to your life..."we're just two lost souls swimmin' in a fishbowl.." (Pink Floyd) "year after year..."

(hey great question!)

The first thing that will draw my attention is the beat of the song. Then the words. I want to hear something with some depth to it. Some real meaning.

Musicianship. I cant stand the simpleton music such as AC/DC, Kiss &etc. Give me some well written stuff, you know, the kind they dont play on the radio. Example- Nevermore, Dream Theater, Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Steel Attack, Kamelot, etc.

I listen for what I want to hear like tolerance and common sense or offensiveness, like pubic enemy or prince, I do not look for anything that I appreciate with my ears

When I'm in a mood I look for music to fit that mood, then I return to it when I'm in that mood again.
