For most jewelry white gold is going to do the same job as platinum. Platinum is heavier and a bit more durable. It can be fabricated better when making complex items than gold, but simple solitaire rings generally are not made in a way that platinum is totally required. Platinum is easier to hand engrave, but there is plenty of engraved white gold jewelery, too.

Platinum is a naturally white metal. White gold is, actually, yellow gold which has been alloyed (mixed) with other metals. White gold contains silver or nickel and very little or no copper. Standard yellow gold has about an even mix of silver, nickel and copper. White gold is plated with rhodium in order to keep its platinum-like luster. This plating tends to disappear with time and wear, causing the gold's natural color to appear.

Sometimes (rarely) you can tell with the naked eye. Silver looks cheaper. Good silver probably looks the same but there should be stampings on the inside of the jewelry.

Look at the stampings on the jewelry. Gold will say 10k or 14k, silver will have numbers only.

.999 Equalls one ounce of silver. It can be distingueshes by its Color of Silver.
Gold is categorized as 10K, 14, 24K,
10K Gols is okay, but it is weak.
!4K, i by far the best, but you have to check it with acid to make sure you havre strong Gold and it is worth more than 14K weak Gold. There is a differecne bacause of the Minerals mixed in with the Gold.
Many people are taken by weak 14K because they can;t test it when they buy it.(Food for Thought)
If you want to buy 14K and get strong Gold I reccomend going to Coin Dealer that sales Gold. He can get you your money's worth.

They look the same and even a jeweler would not know the difference unless it is tested by a formula that determines whether it is gold or not.
