derogatory how? and to who?
by saying that you are to frequently late or rush through things doing a poor job - they can say that
they can't say you are a slut or a jerk
they can't give you a bad recommendation to a prospective employer (but they can say that they would not like to say anything at all - which really says it all)

You would need to prove it , did you have a witness? You need to find out what your state laws are. Was is something that is black and white or something in the gray area ? Could it have been misinterpreted ?Did it have anything to do with race,sex,religious preference,age , etc ? If you want a better answer , you might want to explain what was said ( only if its in the gray area)
