Yes you can use water but I always used breastmilk or formula that way the flavor isn't such a shock for him. Some people put the cereal in a bottle when they start but I made it point of using a spoon and then giving the bottle after each bite to wash it down. This way the baby is getting used to the spoon so when you start to feed him more solid foods he is already accustomed to the process. He won't know what to do at first with the cereal in his mouth but keep putting it back in and give the bottle so he understands that he needs to get it down. Good Luck this is such an exciting time in both of your lives don't forget to note his first solid foods down in his baby book it is so easy to forget little things like this and trust me when you are a grandmother your kids will ask you things like this and it is easier to look it up than trying to remember.

I used formula just because it is so important for his devolpment. Water would be ok but he needs to have a certain amount of formula every day so just to be safe I always used formula to mix the cereal. Be careful with rice cereal it may cause pooping problem. Plugged my little boy up. Dr told me to start with rice then when I called about the constipation he said are you feeding him rice well quit it it plugs them up. What the???? Is all I could say.

Actually Ellie, you can do the rice cereal at 4 months or people wouldnt get it on WIC. You can do water, but formula or breast milk is healthier and fruit juice makes it taste a heck of a lot better.

It is fine, but my doctor always recommended using formula instead because it has a similar taste to what they have been used to drinking for the past 4 months, plus adds a bit of iron, calories and fat to the cereal.

Yes water is fine, but i put one tablespoon of homemade baby formula in my baby's cereal. I make it from scratch. I just take organic brown rice and put it in the blender untill it is powder like a rice flour. Then i take a "flour" and put it in boiling water and cook it on low for 10 minutes. then i just put one table spoon of formula and it's actually not bad! My baby boy loves it.

that's ok, or use breastmilk/formula.

when he/she's older you could use some fruit juice. My favorite when we started adding the jarred foods was to mix the cereal with the fruits.

Just remember to watch baby for a few days everytime you add a new food to the list before you add another.

It is recommended that solids not be introduced until 6 months, but if there is some reason you are starting early, I would try to mix it with breastmilk. Your baby might enjoy the taste a bit more, and he (or she) will be getting the nutrition in your milk, too.

We gave our son rice cereal actually in his bottle, we mixed it with formula, we had to make the nipple hole bigger, but it seemed to fill him up better than just milk. We would give it to him at night with hopes that he would sleep all night. With our daughter we mixed breast milk or formula with it, she never really liked it. But you can make it with water, but it will be more runny and not as good. (I assume it is not as good, I never ate any.)

Yes you can use water but it will not taste very good try using the milk you feed him/her or a little fruit juice. Just make sure you are spoon feeding not putting it in a bottle.
