Honestly like your best friend except with some passion and romance involved. Marriage should be fun, if you think you can't have fun with your partner don't get married.

I guess the word would be to cherrish her and treat her with respect. The Bible says to "honor" each other... like when she walks through the door he would be sitting there in awe acting like "OMG, I'm so honored to have you as my wife, here, have a seat, I cooked dinner, the dishes are done and I fixed every broken appliance in the house."
The main problem is that we're human.
Everything is great while a man likes the woman he loves (a normal decent man), I think most men treat women they like well, but if a man struggles with things that he really dislikes about his woman (things that mean a lot to him) and keeps his feelings repressed and doesn't deal with them, there comes a time when those fellings can't be contained anymore and they turn into resentment. Even though he wants to love her, he now resents her.
It is possible to love someone you don't really like, but if the two don't work on eliminating those things that they don't like, and increasing the things they do like about each other, things don't look pretty.

I like the way a mentor of mine who is a multi-millionaire answers this question.

"You married her, make her happy"

Look marriage is a partnership but when it comes right down to it. A real man will stand up and do what's right. He will be a servant leader to his wife and children. That doesn't mean he becomes a slave to them, he must always put what is right first. But in the end a man must have a solid vertical alignment. A true mans happiness comes from knowing his family is safe, secure and well provided for. When he comes home they are happy because they know they are well taken care of financially, emotionally and physically. The wife is happy and she doesn't notice any other men because she knows that she has a true man.

The "rule of love" is really pretty simple. Love others to the same degree that you love yourself. So... you don't sacrifice all your goals and desires to fulfill theirs, nor do you expect them to do so. You weigh your interests, your goals, your values, equally with theirs. You compare what you want and need versus what they want and need... striking a balance that brings the most benefit to both with the least cost to either.

You show respect where it is deserved. If my wife was an idiot, I would not respect her judgment, nor would I allow her to make life changing decisions for us based on irrational reasoning. But I would respect her right to have a voice, and at least express her opinion. If I was an idiot, I would expect my wife to treat me the same way. (Luckily, neither of us are, at least not all the time!)

As a husband, I would value my wife's goals, ideas and advice; but I would make the decisions for our home. Someone has to be head of the house. Honesty, faithfulness, cherishing, defending... these are what men do.

There's much more... but you get the idea.

You treat your wife with dignity, respect, and as your equal. You love her, even when you don't fully understand her. You make her feel like the most beautiful woman in the world, loved, and cared for. You don't have to always agree on everything, and you don't have to be a wimp with her, but you MUST treat her with respect.

Seriously?

I don't tell her I love her as much as I show her...and I tell her I love her a lot.

I feel it's my job to make her happy. I try and do something to make her smile every day. This isn't easy - sometimes it's quite hard, but I do it because I want to, and because I love her.

It doesn't hurt that I know she really loves me too - and she shows it. She's committed to making me happy too, and it works.

Sure - we have our problems, but we solve them together...with intelligence. We talk a lot...because we want to.

We plan to accomplish our goals together. We help each other out as much as we can, and we don't get upset if we can't. We try and share responsibilities, but each of us will pick up the slack for the other.

We support each other's careers.

We share everything and have no secrets - past or present.

This may not work for everyone, but it sure works for us.

Like the most important person in his life. Nothing else is acceptable in a marrage. Your not friends, you are family. He must show you love, respect, patience, and compassion. He should treat you better than he did when you were dating.
