Trying to install a program that requires the SQL server with a service pack 3. I am sure I need to update this with Microsoft, but how do I know what I have already?

SQL Server is a separate server program that you would need to purchase. OR if you have Office 2000, 2002 or XP(2003) you can install the a base version of SQL which you don't have to pay extra for (SQL Server Desktop Engine)

Actually, unlike what the previous responder told you there is a version of SQL server which is free. It's called SQL server Express.

If you're asking this question there it's quite possible you don't have SQL server installed and far from having to buy a license for the full version, you can probably get away with installing MSDE instead. I don't know if that's still available from Microsoft but it was distributed along with Office 2000. Just scratch around on the latter's install CD.

Once you have MSDE installed you can download SP3 seperately.

Try this :

1) Open SQL Server Enterprise Manager
2) Open Servers and Groups to find your SQL Server
3) Right-Click and select Properties
4) Find the General Tab and look for Product version

Voila!
