Can anyone give me tips on the correct application for a highlighter for your face? Also, would you recommend purchasing a color a shade lighter or darker than my natural skin tone?

It shouldn't really be lighter OR darker than your face color wise. It should be a bit warmer than your current skin tone. Think of how your skin looks when you have spent a few hours in the sun. Not the red burnt look, but the sunkissed golden glowing look.

Highligher should be sheer and shimmery and should be applied to the areas of the face that normally get sun forehead and down the center of the nose (unless you have a really oily t-zone,) across the tops of your cheekbones (under the eyebone but above the cheeks,) and the center of your chin. A shimmery powder works best. I like revlon skin lights, but its a bit messy. The trick to highlighter is to apply a small amount first, blend really really well and if you need more, add it. If you add too much initially, you will just end up with chalky stripes on your face.

Look for a highlighter with mica in it rather than actually GLITTER. the glitter looks way fake.

FYI you would only use darker shades on places you want to contour (eyes, cheekbones etc.)

Purchase a color with the same undertones as your skin. If you are cool, something in the cool pink range is good. If you're warm, look for something more golden. You can get powder, cream/liquid or pencil. I like Clinique's Shimmering Tones powder, Revlon Skinlights cream, and Rimmel All Over pencil.

You can put it under your eyebrows and next to the inner corners of your eyes, along the tops of your cheekbones, and on the V of your top lip. It should be a light application, though!
