I got a Takamine G Series acoustic since I was 17 (I'm 23 now). It was about $500 with the hard-case. Always go with acoustic as your first guitar though. That way, you'll be able to develop callouses faster and get a better feel for the guitar before moving to another one. Good luck.

I have an Ibanez Roadstar (my first electric - got it in 1985), a Godin Artisan (hand made in Montreal, Quebec, Canada) and Norman 12 string acoustic (also hand made in Montreal by the same company) and an Aria acoustic (my least fav of the bunch). I prefer the Godin over all of them but they are pricey if you buy them outside of Canada. The one I bought used for $500 get offers of $1000 US. But I would never part with it and its ebony fretboard and floyd rose tremolo system.
I suggest a Godin Artisan as your first guitar. Good luck.
BTW, both Steve Vai and Joe Satrani play Ibanez, so I agree with the person above that says anything Ibanez (as you can see I still have my original one because it is very good).

Depends on what you want to play. Since your name is "rocker," for rock music and a harder sound definitely go with the classic Fender. Not only that, but it is totally versatile and can be played in any way. But if you want that classic sound for jazz, blues, or just an interesting vibe, get a Gibson.

buy a cheaper guitar to begin with to see if you want to continue playing then spend the extra money and buy a Rickenbacher if you like the guitar.

I got a Fender. I would get just whatever you can afford. If it comes to good models, get Fender, Ibanez, or Gibson.
