Over feeding is the leading cause of your betta dying right after dirty water. And before radical temperature changes. Your betta can easily survive 2-3 times a day, or 2-3 a week. Neither are very good for him. Once a day is generally best until you understand exactly how much to feed him. Really while he'll happily eat himself to death. You should feed him more than he can eat in about 2-3 minutes. Even better is to take a look at bettatalk's pictures of betta bellies. So you know when you are over feeding.

I had a male beta, he went without food for 2 months, i went on vacation, when i came back i was expecting the worse, and no one was dead, not even the 2 angle fish i had in there, so i'd say 2-3 times a week...

I heard everything........but I feed mine any time he goes apeshit when I approach the bowl.........suggested times are 2 times a day......and yeah, mine's gettin' a li'l pudgy, but what else does he have to do? He doesn't eat what he doesn't want.........and I clean his nassy bowl once a week when I see food accumulating...I give mine the flakes and bloodworms......he hates the actual "betta food" pellets..............fish are people too....they know what they want and when.........watch your fish.....they have personalities......you'll KNOW when to feed him.....if you are observant and if you really CARE about him and don't use him as an ornament..........
