Let me let you in a little secret,
Whenever you enter any "sushi-ya" (sushi-place) look at the cheffs. If they're anything But Japanese, Get Out. Meaning Koreans, Chinese, Hispanics, etc. Japanese cheffs are very expensive, and if the owner doesn't want to fork out for a trained cheff from Japan, what do you expect from their product. That's what makes a good shushi-ya, a japanese cheff. Other nationalities, make their sushi with a twist, put a different something, just doesn't taste right.

I disagree with rdsoxfan. There are plenty of other races that are good at sushi making. My mom is Chinese, and she makes excellent california and fish rolls.

A great place is Sushi House in Alameda, across the street from Alameda Beach. It is crowded sometimes, and you might need to wait an hour for a table of 4+ , but it an absolutely superb place. It is also cheaper than other places.

I recomend Lion King.

You can't go to any big name sushi bars. Always go to a place where there are a cluster of small family owned ones, and try each and every one of them until you like one. Also try things you don't normally try at places. Try the beef tataki, try the shrimp tempura, the sashmi, the hand rolls, the Udon noodles, the black dragon rolls, etc... Try new things at the small restaurants, sample everything from everywhere and see which one suits you the best.
