I got a sweet deal on a 1970 Toyota FJ40 Landcruiser that's been in storage for 2 years. It was running when garaged (in a very hot climate) but now it won't start. I need suggestions on the best procedures to get her ready to run. I'll put in a new battery, new gasoline, new plugs, change the oil, and flush and refill the radiator. Tips? Suggestions? Thanks!

i had a similar thing when i stored my 84 cj7. depends on how he stored it...what happened with me, is i left gasoline in the tank and put stabilizer in it. that gas was fine, unfortunately the gasoline in the fuel lines gummed up. took an air compressor to them and blew them out.

check and make sure that fuel is coming out(should be a mechanical pump, so you can disconnect the line and put a bottle or something there. ) check the fuel filter and blow it out.

once it starts, sounds like you have most of the stuff covered.

check the diff oil, transmission oil, T/C oil..etc. its possible that stuff has never been changed, and in an older vehicle, it'll make a lot of difference in how it runs to change it.

check the tires too. was it stored in the air? if not, the tires have probably flat-spotted, and may be unusable. it's possible they've dry-rotted also.

If your problem is only that it won't start, you are on the right trail. If the engine is getting gas and has spark, it should run. Modern gasolines will gum up after a few months and you may have to clean out the fuel system. A test for this is to drop a FEW drops of gas into the intake while you are cranking it. If it fires and quits, you have a problem with the fuel system. Be VERY careful if you do this so that a backfire won't burn the container you have in your hand. A test of the ignition system is to have your girlfriend hold a sparkplug while you crank the engine. LOL!

I bought an 85 FJ-60 about a month ago that had sat for 5 years. The biggest problem I had was the bad gas in the system. I flushed the fuel lines and dropped the gas tank and flushed it to. Put a new fuel filter in and away we went.

Change the fuel filter and the points and condenser in the distributor and that should be it. Maybe add brake fluid and possibly bleed the brakes. 2 years should not be that devastating, but soft items like tires, belts, hoses, etc will deteriorate pretty quickly in a hot dry climate.
