Rap was better in the 80's and early 90's. The producers at least had MUSIC in the beat antd the rappers spoke ENGLISH. now they just knock the speakers and talk GIBBERISH over it.
Rock (mainstream) is still shite. It was in the 80's. Bon Jovi?
The underground in the 80's was awesome, both the REAL METAL and the "alternative rock". The modern Underground in America is getting good, at least as far as metal is concerned. You ar allowed to play your guitar now, before (mid 90's-'04) if you knew more than 3 chords you were a witch and they burned you.

I love Eighies music. My fave bands are:-
New Order
Depeche Mode
Erasure
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
The Smiths
Kraftwerk
Einsturende Neubauten (this is a real band name)
Electronic
Human League
As for music quality, I think that music now is AWFUL!!!!! Most bands now are pure Joy Division copies (have people in the US heard of Joy Division??) or are manufactured to get money. Similarly, a lot of singers now don't play their own instruments, something nearly all of my favourite bands do as standard. Too many bands now also don't earn their fame in the way most of the Eighties bands had to.
The 90's weren't bad as a period of music, as i love the Britpop movement which reflected a deep, emotion filled and passionate Mancunian (Manchester) musical history. Indie as a genre has also become more mainstream and acceptable, making my life easier.
PS Please note I am British not American.

I like Peter Gabriel...In Your Eyes, from "Say Anything" is just an awesome song. I don't think music has gotten better or worse now...just different, although I do feel that music is less about emotion and more about money and material things than it used to be. So maybe today's music is just shallower.

RUSHHH.
great stuff, im actually into indie rock and screamo and the like, but i enjoy rush. I think music is different now, but the people are the same way about it other than they dont want their fav band to be popular, like they did in the 80s if im not mistaken.
