I didn't watch "Sesame Street" when I was younger (and I still don't!), but I know quite a bit about it, and I have a general idea of it...

I spent my first 22 years in a different country...a Russian version of Sesame Street (Ulitsa Sezam) was first shown in the late 1990's...I was too old for it by then! :)

And Ulitsa Sezam is different from the American counterpart in many ways, but they do have some similiarities...they are the same sort of show, but they have different characters and such.

Oscar the Grouch used to live in a gated golf community in Greenwich, Connecticut. He was the CEO of the Electric Company in the 70's. But that was absorbed by Reading Rainbow in a hostile takeover. When that happened, it came to light that he, along with Julia Child and the Galloping Gourmet had been cooking the books at The Electric Company.
So he was indicted, along with Julia, Graham Kerr, and Morgan Freeman. The stress exacerbated his cookie habit (which he picked up from Cookie Monster), which soon spiraled out of control. His wife, Prairie Dawn, divorced him & took what was left of his fortune, dignity, & letters of the day. From there it was just a short trip down Sesame Street & into the garbage can.
Sad, but true. So kids: Just say NO! to cookies.

Yes I think it's true, because I'm the same way. I'm lazy and refuse to contribute to society as well, so now I live in a trash can on 42nd Street in New York City.

I disagree with your analysis of Oscar the Grouch. I believe he is contributing to society by consuming waste. This benefits society through the removal of waste and at a reduced cost.

No, just to entertain kids... and maybe to give the kids an idea about the consequence of grouchiness and bad attitude..which is having to live in the trash can!? What a pity you never watched it....you wouldn't have this educational gap.

It tells children that how corrupt the world is nowadays. It wants to show the true side of the real world. Have you seen the gangster"ish" sesamese street picture? click here:

i think this picture tries to show how cartoons try to show what the real world is like to childrens...
and i think Oscar represents a homeless guy who would even live in a trashcan...

This is an excellent analogy as to why my grandmother never let anyone into her home. Unfortunately she wasn't a green and fuzzy...so it was more difficult to make excuses for her being a monster.

He lives in a trash can because he was sexually molested as an infant and it has destroyed his self-esteem. Incidentally, Bert's Dad was the perpetrator!

I think he lives in a garbage can because he is so mean & grouchy no one would hire him. It just got worse from there. As the years passed he got more & more bitter. Then the drug & achohol abuse began...
