Some players that aren't multi-region out of the box can be altered. You can often use a remote hack (press a few buttons on the remote) that will change a player to multi-region even if it inititally only plays R2 discs (for example). Check the links below for a couple of good sites with list of hacks that will turn European DVD players into multi-region player. However if you do this, you may affect your warranty and you need to be careful as there are no guarantees it will work.

Some players (e.g. some Toshiba and Pioneer players) can't be hacked and would need to be chipped (a new microchip inserted), but I believe this is now illegal. If your machine isn't on the hack list, it could be multi-region, but you'd need to get an American disc to test it out.

Where is here?

The US is region 1 as is Canada. If you live outside the US or Canada then you will need a multi-region DVD player to play the DVD.

Multi-region DVD players are not hard to find or too expensive. For more info on DVD regions check the link in the source box below.

The above answers are correct, but another option wpuld be to change the media player on your PC (assuming you have one) to region 1. You would then have to change this back to region 2 (assuming you're British) to watch your British DVDs. You can change region four times in total. If you only want to watch the DVD once this is a cheaper solution than getting a new player.

You'll need a region Free or Mult-region DVD player. Also US DVD are normally NTSC format, so there could be a problem in displaying the picture correctly on a UK PAL TV. Some TVs do enable correct play back and some don't!!!

Not unless your dvd player is adapted.
Each region has it's own players and they will only play dvd's from that region.
