A psychiatrist can only work to the extent that the patient is willing to help herself. While a "shrink" is highly educated and trained, not every doctor is right for every patient. It's perfectly normal to have low self-esteem at the end of a long term relationship, but building yourself back up has to come mostly from within yourself.

It's unclear what is not "normal" about your life or why you're unhappy. You have to love yourself before you can fully love another person. I went through a drawn out and painful divorce, remained single for 6 lonely years, and met the love of my life at the precise time that I had given up on any hope of being part of a relationship. It was when I found security within that I became approachable and receptive to giving and receiving love. I was 33.

The most important thing for you to do before seeking professional help is to think of anyone in your peer group or family that can help you and listen to your fears and your problems, and try not to spend too much time beating yourself up or putting yourself down. We have enough obstacles in our lives and enough people that try to bring us down without becoming our own worst enemies. Shut down negative thought processes ( easier said than done ), focus your energies on things that you LIKE about life ( there have to be a few ), and know that you're not alone.

Depression can be caused by a number of factors, some of which are chemical in nature while others are non-physical in nature. The first step is to seek a medical examination from a competent physician to rule out any chemical imbalances, immune system dysfunctions or other physical causations. After that's ruled out, you might consider various forms of psychotherapy to help you to explore the emotional and environmental dynamics that might be causing the depression.

Just remember that depression CAN be helped, but it's up to you to take the necessary steps to make it happen. Nobody can do it for you...but many professionals are available to do it with you.

Good luck!

No shrink can get you to have a "normal" life but what I can tell you you have to find you before you can be happy with any one. I am 36 and have a major level of depression and had to go through a lot of soul searching and find me no one can make me happy but me some one can add to that happiness.

I have personally seen many councellors over the last 18 years of my life and can tell you that they are expensive and useless! The truth they will NOT tell you is that ONLY YOU can help you! You have to DECIDE not to be this way. I have been diagnosed with Manic Depression (at age 15) and after years of all the "professional b.s." I have finally realized that I did all the talking and all they did was agree with me. So I paid all that money to have these people repeatedly tell me how I was so good at figuring things out for myself. I paid for NOTHING!!! You can learn to OVERCOME your own depression yourself...AND FOR FREE!!!! Happiness does not cost a thing except a little effort on your part to change our own way of looking at things. You have no need to pay someone to sit there while you figure out how on your own. Take it from me, do not waste the time or money. Educate yourself, yourself! Self- help books, etc. ! You have options that are not useless or expensive....use them!

i think of this beats the alternative, this is to push aside the reality that there are those with emotional issues which includes medical melancholy, rigidity disease, etc. that could desire to be addressed in a healing environment. i could extremely err on the part of warning to ascertain that somebody who's "depressed" gets the help they want instead of pretending that each thing is okay and then committing suicide. I do agree that we ought to constantly no longer purely have self assurance each thing a psychiatrist or psychologist says, yet then the comparable element could nicely be mentioned for any well-known practitioner. no person is conscious a hundred% approximately each thing of their container, yet we are in a position to take a number of their expertise, do our own analyze and optimistically combine our supplies to get the help we want.

Only you can solve your problems, a skrink only helps. If you go into therapy with a negative attitude and continue to be close minded you will get no where no matter how good the Doctor is.

No. they can listen and guide you but it is up to you and only you to decide when you are going to jump out of the depression. There are however meds that can help. It does not mean you are "crazy" they can just help you not to overreact to situations so you can think more clearly.
